It seems like every year there is some new health trend in the media that claims to increase your metabolism, decrease your waist circumference, cleanse your gut, or boost your immune system. The unfortunate thing about a lot of these health fads is that they have not been signed off on by a medical professional. Before you decide to hop on a new trend train, it’s important to understand that many popular crazes can have very negative effects on your oral health. Read on to learn more.

Fads That Can Harm Your Teeth

Thanks to the internet, you can search for just about anything and find an answer, however, the information you procure may not always come with all of the correct and necessary details. If you’ve ever looked online for health tips, there’s a good chance you’ve come across popular trends that claim to increase your health. The truth is, they may have some benefits, but here are several popular fads that can actually wreak havoc on your teeth and gums:

Kombucha

While this drink may be trendy, it’s certainly not anything new. Fermented tea has been a “thing” for centuries, and it claims to aid in weight loss, prevent cancer, and improve digestion. The problem with consuming it too often is the extremely high levels of sugar content and the acidity produced by the fermentation. At a pH level of 3, it can easily damage enamel while the sugar then causes cavities to the vulnerable teeth.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Lemon Juice

Both of these beverages are used commonly as a form of detox for the liver and digestive tract. Supposedly, they can also aid in the healing of a sore throat, however, these claims are not necessarily medically supported. Additionally, like kombucha, both are high in acid. The worst part is, if you have existing dental restorations, these acids can actually start to deteriorate them over time, causing the need for replacement or further restoration.

Sparkling Water

This option might seem like the lesser of the evils, and many people switch to drinking sparkling water in an attempt to curb their sugary soft drink consumption. While you may not have to be concerned with sugar, most sparkling waters have a pH just as high as a soft drink, making them very acidic.

Activated Charcoal

This trend is specifically geared towards oral hygiene. The idea behind it is that it absorbs stains on the teeth and toxins in the mouth, promoting healthy gums and whiter teeth. While this may sound enticing, the American Dental Association (ADA) has stated that there is not enough evidence to prove these claims and that conversely, the rough and gritty nature of the charcoal can actually cause undue wear and tear on your enamel.

The best way to take care of your body is always to listen to what your healthcare professionals tell you. The media may be full of information, but it’s certainly not always accurate. Talk to your dentist about how you can care for your oral health while keeping your teeth and gums in great shape.
